South Dakota Cop, dog duo make drug bustSouth Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Swets found cash and cocaine Friday in a car on I-90.
He detained a vehicle with Oregon plates about 8:30 a.m. Friday after he reportedly noticed "equipment violations" or, in layman's terms, several dangling objects hanging from the rear-view mirror blocking the vision of the driver.
Swets took his canine partner Crocket on a routine sniff of the outside of the vehicle.
"Crocket was put to work and indicated the odor of illegal drugs coming from the vehicle," South Dakota Highway Patrol Capt. Greg Ingemunson said. "While searching the vehicle, a false air-bag compartment was located."
The compartment contained about 53 grams of cocaine and 11 bundles of U.S. currency. Officers estimate the value of the currency is $105,000. The estimated street value of the cocaine is $5,300, Ingemunson said.
The driver, 28-year-old Jose Alberto Ocheo Leon of Woodburn, Ore., and his female passenger, Elvia Rico Cervantes of West Linn, Ore., no age given, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled substance. They were taken to the Lawrence County Jail in Deadwood. A court date had not been scheduled as of Friday evening.
Ingemunson said there was also a 13-year-old female passenger who was placed in the custody of South Dakota Department of Social Services.
South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and Spearfish Police Department assisted the Highway Patrol after the stop.
The arrest took place on Interstate 90 near milepost 13 at Spearfish Canyon Golf Course. Swets and Crocket have patrolled the I-90 corridor in the northern Black Hills for more than three years.
