OxyContin - South Dakota New Drug Danger'Poor man's heroin' and 'hillbilly heroin' are both street names for the drug OxyContin. Abuse of the powerful drug has been a big problem in other parts of the country. Now there is no doubt that the abuse of the drug has moved into this area of South Dakota. Monday, a Si Tanka University student in Huron overdosed on the drug and died. (Related Stories: Overdose Investigation Suspect in Court) Tuesday night, Sioux Falls, South Dakota police made a drug bust - one of the substances they found was OxyCodone, a narcotic in the same family of drugs as OxyContin.
South Dakota patients with chronic diseases say the pills are a life-saver that frees them from intense pain. But in the wrong hands, OxyContin is dangerous and deadly. Drug investigators call it pharmacy-grade heroin. It's a timed-release medication, but when addicts crush the pills, they get the full effect all at once. Darcy Jensen from Prairie View Prevention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota explains just how frightening the addiction can be, "It really becomes a dangerous, deadly game because you don't know what you're getting. It's no longer a prescription drug, it's something that's being abused." She adds that everyone needs to be on the lookout for abuse of the drug.
There may not be a lot of cases of OxyContin abuse in South Dakota, but local pharmacists are aware that they have to be very careful. They've have seen forged prescriptions for the powerful drug. In other parts of the country, pharmacists have even stopped carrying the drug because it has been the target of pharmacy break-ins. That's also a concern for Sioux Falls, South Dakota pharmacist Chris Poncelet, "Even when the pharmacy is closed, like for a holiday, there's still people who will try to get in because they know that the pharmacy is locked. They know that the pharmacy is locked, so they'll try to sneak in when the store is open."
That's why he keeps the OxyContin locked up - tight. But he will continue to fill prescriptions for many of his customers who depend on it for pain relief.
