South Dakota police, drug dogs check lockers at Brookings High School

Drug-sniffing dogs conducting a surprise search Thursday of South Dakota Brookings High School's lockers turned up no illegal drugs. The dogs, brought in by the Brookings County, South Dakota Sheriff's Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, took about 40 minutes to search the school's hallway space and 1,150 lockers, said BHS Principal Doug Beste.

He said while the dogs didn't find any drugs, they did stop at eight lockers in the school. As a result, he said, school officials opened those lockers and the surrounding lockers to investigate. Altogether, he said, they looked in more than 20 lockers.

"By policy, we tell the students that we have the right to do that," Beste said. "We checked and in the inspection, we didn't find any illegal drugs."

Beste said South Dakota officers told him a common reason why dogs will hit on a location where drugs aren't found is that an odor of drugs may be on clothing or other items.

While the dogs don't make an appearance at the school very often, Beste says the possibility of bringing them in is always there.

"We tell the students it could happen at any time. I've done them slightly less than once a year, but I told the students as this school year started that I was promising them that we would bring the dogs in again this year, just to make sure they knew I thought it was time. I wouldn't be surprised if we bring them in another time this year."

Beste made the decision to bring the dogs in after consulting with Superintendent Orville Creighton.

This time, the search was confined to hallways and lockers only. But, Beste says, the school does reserve the right to check in other locations in the future, particularly in the parking lots.

During Beste's tenure as principal, the dogs have never found any illegal drugs in the high school.

"But the handlers assure me it works."
