South Dakota drug suspects plead guilty

RAPID CITY, South Dakota -- A woman from Washington and a man from Louisiana each pleaded guilty in 7th Circuit Court this week to felony possession of marijuana, after a recent traffic stop along Interstate 90 just east of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Yolanda Davis, 41, of Seattle pleaded guilty to possession of one to 10 pounds of marijuana, which is a class 4 felony; and Dorian Dinish, 36, of Louisiana, pleaded guilty to possession of more than two ounces of marijuana, a class 6 felony, according to South Dakota deputy state's attorney Kenneth Varns.

South Dakota Judge Thomas Trimble set sentencing for 9:15 a.m. Dec. 1.

According to the South Dakota state's attorney's office, South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper Matt Oxner stopped the car Davis was driving for speeding and having a dangling object. Davis and Dinish, the passenger, were driving from Seattle to Tennessee.

Oxner became suspicious and asked Dinish whether the car contained any illegal narcotic that his drug dog would detect.

Dinish voluntarily handed over a marijuana cigarette and a plastic bag of marijuana, the release said. Later, during a search of the car, Oxner found five pounds of BC Bud — a high-potency marijuana — wrapped in plastic bags with dryer sheets to mask the scent.

Varns said, "It was later discovered in reviewing the tape of the arrest, that while Oxner was searching the truck of the car, Davis, who was seated in the patrol car, was using the trooper's cell phone to tell others they had been busted."
