South Dakota senate approves Olson's meth-lab billPIERRE, South Dakota - The South Dakota Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation that expands the definition of child abuse to include exposing a child to a place where methamphetamines are produced.
The vote was 33-1 for the measure, whose prime sponsor is Sen. Ed Olson, R-Mitchell. The legislation, Senate Bill 66, now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
Olson said the state Department of Social Services currently has sufficient authority to protect a child found to be in such a circumstance.
D"But I believe with the extreme prevalence of methamphetamine in our state - that it is something that really needs to be highlighted and separated out. It's nasty, nasty stuff," he said.
No other senator spoke about the bill. Olson is also working on legislation that would require the disclosure to potential buyers if a house or other property was known to have been used for production of methamphetamines. Drug Rehab by County
