A South Dakota Summerset man accused of pimping and finding customers for expensive prostitutes throughout several states is being held without bond in Pennington County Jail.
It's a case unlike any other for this area, Pennington County State's Attorney Glenn Brenner said.
Brenner asked magistrate Judge Scott Bogue to set 34-year-old Jeramy R. Caron's bond at $10 million, but Bogue did not set a bond.
Caron is charged with three counts of pimping and two counts of hiring for sexual activity, but 20 to 50 additional counts are possible, Brenner said.
Caron's actions may qualify as "human trafficking," Brenner said.
According to Brenner, Caron used contacts in Las Vegas, Chicago and Minnesota to arrange liaisons costing between $1,500 and $2,000.
"He's been known to have as much as $150,000 on him at a time," Brenner said.
Caron was recently arrested in Globe, Ariz., with 170 pounds of marijuana in his possession, Brenner told Bogue.
Caron's arrest ends a year-long joint investigation by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Summerset Police and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, according to a Rapid City Police Department news release.
A citizen's complaint led to the police investigation, the release said.
"Caron was discovered soliciting prostitutes and arranging customers for prostitutes using the Internet," the release said. "To date, six prostitutes from surrounding states have disclosed information on Caron's operation."
In South Dakota court Thursday, Caron called the allegations "fictitious" and claimed he had just filed for bankruptcy.
Pimping is a class 6 felony, punishable by up to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Hiring for sexual activity is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
